How to choose an AI assistant app in 2026
Accuracy, privacy and price matter more than raw features. Here’s the checklist our reviewers use before an assistant makes our lists.

AI assistants now draft, summarise, research and even plan your day. They also differ a lot in how accurate they are, what they do with your data and what they cost once the free tier runs out.
Start with what you’ll actually use it for
Most people use an assistant for three things: writing first drafts, summarising long documents and quick research. Pick the one that’s best at your top job, not the one with the longest feature list.

An AI assistant that drafts, summarizes and researches in seconds so your team ships faster.
Check where answers come from
For research, citations are non-negotiable. Open a few answers and check the sources really say what the assistant claims. Good apps link to the exact passage.
Read the privacy section before you paste anything
Look for SOC 2 or GDPR compliance on the listing and a clear statement that your conversations aren’t used to train public models. Every app page on AI Apps has a Security & Compliance section.
Don’t forget assistants for the family
Not every assistant is about work. Some of the most loved apps this year write bedtime stories or help kids practise reading.
